eircom to extend fibre broadband to extra 200,000 properties
1.4 million homes and businesses to have access to super-fast 100Mb broadband by 2016
Today eircom announced plans to increase its national fibre footprint to an additional 200,000 homes and business across Ireland.
This means 1.4 million homes and businesses will have access to eFibre broadband by July 2016, with 70% of the country able to access up to 100Mb broadband by December 2016.
The rollout programme from eircom is currently running ahead of schedule and aims to give a greater number of people across Ireland access to super-fast broadband services.
eircom should pass 700,000 properties by the turn of the year while the latest announcement will enable an additional 562 communities across all 26 counties to get access to eircom’s eFibre broadband.
This service offers super-fast broadband to homes and businesses while the extension of the eFibre broadband network will assist with the government’s National Broadband Plan.
Herb Hribar, CEO of eircom Group said that no other operator in Ireland is investing in fibre broadband as extensively as eircom and described the latest move as a “critical step forward”.
“This is a very positive development,” he explained.
“Our investment reinforces our commitment to build a network for a nation that connects as many customers as possible to Ireland’s largest telecommunications infrastructure.
“Today’s announcement maximises the footprint of fibre broadband that can be currently achieved on a commercial basis in Ireland and we are committed to work with the Government to ensure that the National Broadband Plan provides access to high speed broadband for all.”
The National Broadband Plan aims to provide internet services to areas where connections were previously deemed to be insufficient.
Back in May, eircom announced it planned to provide the eFibre service to 600,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2013 but the latest figures suggest the total will be considerably higher than this initial estimate.
The expansion of eFibre network will provide more choice for customers across Ireland and give them super-fast broadband speeds that are on a par with those seen in the major cities.
