Look to the Horizon: UPC launches “extraordinary” new TV service

UPC has had quite an impact on the digital TV and broadband market this week after unveiling the new Horizon TV service

The Round Room at The Mansion House, Dublin provided the ideal location to showcase a release which offers digital TV and broadband consumers more than ever before.

Special guests The Camembert Quartet and Après Match got proceedings underway with a mix of famous TV theme tunes and impressions of some of Ireland’s most famous TV and sporting personalities.

The stage was then set for host Craig Doyle to reveal all in front of a packed media audience, and highlight how UPC’s Horizon TV service intends to go head to head with Sky.

New UPC Ireland CEO Magnus Ternsjö was first to speak with Doyle, highlighting the rigorous process that went into ensuring the product gives everything a customer wanted. He said thousands of customers had experienced trial periods ahead of a “defining moment for UPC” and explained that their feedback had gone in to developing a product that is “beyond what our competitors can provide.”

The new state of the art, all-in-one Horizon TV box allows for the recording of 4 shows at once, unique programming suggestions tailored to consumers viewing habits and 50 - 150Mb broadband.

Keeping track of changing consumer habits

Doron Hacmon, Head of Products of Liberty Global, UPC Ireland’s parent company, highlighted changing consumer habits and pointed to people watching TV in a variety of different ways.

As a result, the Horizon TV service also allows viewers to watch their favourite shows across a multitude of platforms including via laptops, iPads and iPhones.

By changing the boundaries of what a consumer can expect, Mr Hacmon said the package enables Horizon TV to deliver a better experience, bringing “everything under one roof”.

Having 19 HD channels as standard is just the first step, as improving search and recommendation functions enables an individual to find the kind of TV programmes that they want to watch.

Vice President of Sales and Marketing at UPC Ireland, Mark Coan, had the last word on what he hoped the latest Horizon TV service would mean for consumers.

“UPC Horizon TV will completely transform consumers’ TV experience, by doing two extraordinary things, bringing Irish consumers closer to the TV they love in better and new ways, and putting all their services together in one clever box. These services combine to make a unique product which is unmatched by any other TV provider.”

This new, ‘highly visual’ way of enjoying TV brings the consumer closer to the shows they love, while heightening the experience and the enjoyment that top quality programming can bring.
