Looking forward to a quiet January? Here's what's coming to Netflix

With the excesses of Christmas out of the way, and the New Year just around the corner, thoughts are starting to turn to New Year’s resolutions.

If you’re one of the many who has decided to have a quiet January, Netflix could be your saving grace. Here’s what’s coming to the streaming service in January…

Even more new Netflix Originals

Netflix has always pioneered its own original content, and in the last year we’ve seen the addition of standout shows like Stranger Things, The Crown and the latest series of Black Mirror to its already strong content bank.

And January 2017 will see even more originals added to the platform, including the much anticipated A Series of Unfortunate Events, starring Neil Patrick Harris. Other additions include:

  • One Day at a Time, a multi-camera comedy, which follows three generations of the same Cuban-American family living in the same house;
  • Frontier, which is the first original scripted series ordered by Discovery, and is about the North American fur trade in the late 18th century; and
  • Riverdale, which we don’t have many details on yet, but is said to be about ‘exploring the surrealism of small town life’.

In case you missed it, Netflix also premiered a new original, called The OA in mid-December. This sci-fi drama is about an adopted young woman who resurfaces after having been missing for seven years. If you’re a fan of Stranger Things, you’ll love this!

January will also see the addition of new series of popular kids’ favourites Voltron: Legendary Defender and Tarzan and Jane.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

In addition to the Netflix Originals, comedy fans will be pleased to see series 11 of long-running sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia added to the service from 3 January.

Season 12 just kicked off in the States, so make sure to catch up before it hits these shores!

Movies for those January nights in

There are already tonnes of films to choose from on Netflix, but if you’ve exhausted all your options, there will be some new additions in January.

Some classics, like E.T., The Shining, Caddyshack, and Braveheart will all be added, as well as more recent movies, including:

  • V for Vendetta;
  • Hugo;
  • Vanilla Sky;
  • Justin Bieber: Never Say Never; and
  • Ocean’s Twelve.

Fans of Superman will also be pleased to see a number of movies from the franchise, including Superman The Movie, Superman Returns, and Superman II, III, and IV.
