Sky Movies has announced the Irish TV premiere of Oscar-nominated movie ‘Philomena’ will happen this week, with it being made available on Sky Movies On Demand from September 12th, and then on Sky Movies Premier from September 19th.

‘Philomena’, starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, is a heartwarming as well as tragic drama, based on the true story of an Irish teen who was forced to live in a convent after falling pregnant from pre-marital fling, and whose subsequent child was taken away from her and given up for adoption to an unknown family.

The story centres around the journey Philomena (Dench) undertakes to find her estranged son 50 years later, and with the help of cynical journalist Martin Sixsmith (Coogan), her search sees them traveling to Ireland and further, unravelling deception and scandal.

Speaking about his character Martin Sixsmith, Steve Coogan said: “He was looking for a gig, and this old lady came into his life who had been through so much more and dealt with it with so much more grace than he had. It did serve the story to have him a little unsympathetic early on, to have him go somewhere.”

Ann-Marie MacKay, Director of Products, Sky Ireland said that they were “delighted” to be bringing this critically acclaimed movie to Irish television screens.

She added: “With Sky Movies On Demand movies customers have access to thousands of hours of content once their Sky+ box is connected to their broadband, giving them flexibility in how and when they watch the latest releases, as well as a huge library of classic titles.”
