Bord Gáis Energy has today confirmed that it is to raise its electricity prices by 2.2% from March 1, 2014.

Bord Gáis Energy is the last major supplier to raise their electricity prices following increases from Airtricity in November of 2013 and Electric Ireland in January of this year.

Around 317,000 domestic electricity customers with Bord Gáis Energy will now see their prices increase by 2.2% per year from March 1.

With this electricity price rise, Bord Gáis Energy customers can now expect to pay an additional €26 per year for their electricity and comes at a time when households are already struggling to keep up with the cost of energy in Ireland.

Eoin Clarke, Head of, says : “With credit to Bord Gáis Energy they have delayed increasing their prices until now although their competitors increased over the past few months. Bord Gáis Energy now offer the cheapest standard unit rate but they are not the cheapest electricity supplier at present. With Energia currently offering a 15% discount to electricity customers and Bord Gáis Energy only offering a 10% discount, Energia is now the cheapest electricity supplier in the Irish market.

“The important thing for households is to try to keep a lid on energy costs,” said Clarke. “There are two simple ways to do this — use less energy by making our homes more energy efficient  and paying less for the energy we do use by switching to the most competitive tariff for our needs. There is now a €171 gap between the most expensive and most cost effective electricity supplier in the Irish market.”
