Bord Gáis Energy last week announced some ‘back to school’ offers for both new and existing customers.

There’s been a lot of talk about an energy price war in recent weeks, especially with SSE Airtricity’s price cuts coming into effect from 1 August, so are these new Bord Gais Energy deals worth switching to?

New customers

New customers signing up to electricity with Bord Gáis Energy can get 10% off their bills, plus a €75 voucher for Tesco, which is sure to come in handy in the back-to-school season, and 1,000 Tesco Clubcard points.

Meanwhile, new dual fuel customers will be able to avail of a 12% discount on electricity, and 10% off gas. On top of this, they will also get the €75 Tesco voucher and 1,000 Tesco Clubcard points.

These offers apply to customers who sign up for Level Pay and Paperless Billing. Level Pay basically means you pay the same amount every month for your energy, with the amount you pay determined by the previous year’s consumption. It can be a useful way of budgeting, as your bills will be the same amount throughout the year.

Existing customers

If you are an existing gas or electricity customer, you’ll get a good deal for opting to go with Bord Gáis Energy for both, as follows:

  • Existing gas customers get 12% off electricity and 7% off gas plus a €75 Tesco voucher and 1,000 Tesco Clubcard points;
  • Existing electricity customers can get 7% off electricity and 10% off gas.

Once these contracts are up, existing Bord Gáis Energy customers will also get an ongoing 5% discount every year, once they continue to pay by Level Pay and Paperless Billing.

Best deals on the market

These Bord Gáis Energy deals are attractive, especially at this time of year, as the €75 voucher for Tesco could help towards the cost of uniforms, stationary, notebooks etc.

However, there are still cheaper deals on the market. For example, SSE Airtricity is currently offering a 25% discount on its standard electricity unit rate, while Energia is offering a similar discount.

Bear in mind that if you’re a dual fuel customer currently on standard rates and you make the switch to the cheapest gas and electricity deals out there, you could save a whopping €360 per year.

The back-to-school period is an expensive - and busy - time, so it could be worth switching to a better deal before then. Believe it or not, it generally only takes about 5-7 minutes to shop around and complete a switch.

And remember, all suppliers use the same network, so you don’t need to worry about a loss of service.
