Scoil Mhuire National School Horeswood, in County Wexford, has received more than €10,000 from the energy supplier SSE Airtricity as part of the company’s plans to help the school become more energy efficient.

Airtricity Energy Services have installed an energy management system designed to help the teachers and pupils at the school better understand their power usage. The system is designed to measure energy usage in different areas of the school, thus providing a detailed report that the school can work with to increase energy efficiency.

The school’s Principal, Margaret Rossiter, had this to say about the equipment installed by Airtricity Energy Services: “In addition to the modern new whiteboards and projects, SSE has put in place a new energy management system that will help to save the school money, meaning we can spend more in other areas.”

Commitment to local community

SSE Airtricity currently operates the power plant at Great Island and is in the process of building a clean gas power plant on the same site. As part of their commitment to supporting the local community, the gas and electricity supplier pays €25,000 a year to Wexford County Council for the duration of construction of the new power plant; this money is shared amongst a number of community projects in the local area.

SSE Airtricity also claims to have created a number of jobs employing local workers and that by doing so they are indirectly supporting other businesses in the area.

SSE’s Great Island CCGT Project Manager, Peter Gavican, had this to say about the impact of building the new power plant on the local community: “Through the construction and operation of our new gas fired power plant at Great Island, we are giving a real boost to the local economy in terms of investment and jobs as well as community support.”

It is believed that in the future, these developments at Great Island will enable the construction of a gas pipeline to County Wexford.
