eircom launch Ireland’s first 4G mobile service

eircom reveal new 4G service will be up to ten times faster and promises free unlimited 4G data until March 2014

The eircom group has launched Ireland’s first 4G mobile service, introducing customers to super-fast mobile data speeds.

It will be around ten times faster than anything previously available and eircom predicts peak 4G speeds of between 20 and 25Mbps.

The service is already live in Dublin, Carlow and Athlone, making it available to 1.2 million customers –around 30 per cent of the population.

By the end of December, plans are in place for 43 per cent of the population to receive the service, including those in Limerick, Galway and Cork.

As part of their €330 million investment into mobile technologies, the 4G services will be available from Meteor and eMobile as part of both bundled and stand-alone packages.

And in a bid to show customers about the true benefits of the technology, eircom users will have access to unlimited 4G data for free until March 2014.

The new super-fast service will allow for faster streaming and downloading of video content and provide quicker uploading speeds for social media sites, including Twitter and Facebook.

If that wasn’t enough, web browsing and emails will also be significantly enhanced as the company continues the process of improving the country’s infrastructure.

Herb Hribar, eircom Group CEO, said he was delighted that Ireland’s largest telecommunications provider had been able to offer the country’s first 4G network.

“This technology will transform the mobile user experience in Ireland,” he said. “Our vision is to provide seamless access to high speed broadband across Ireland using both fixed and mobile technologies.

“Using recently acquired 4G spectrum, we have fast tracked our network investment to ensure that we are the first provider to offer customers this significantly improved mobile broadband experience, underlying our commitment to the country to provide top-class telecommunications infrastructure and our commitment to customers to provide a quality service that offers real value.”

The Meteor Smart Essential Plan is available for €49 a month and features unlimited calls and texts, as well as a 3GB monthly data allowance.

Meanwhile the eircom Bundle with eMobile Unlimited Data is available for €69 a month for new customers.

It offers 4G mobile, super-fast eFibre and home phone while existing customers can add the 4G service for €24 per month for the first six months.

Both packages provide unlimited 4G data until March 2014 giving customers the ideal opportunity to see exactly what the latest developments can offer to them.
