Today, Sky Ireland revealed some fascinating insights into how consumers in Ireland are absorbing and consuming the broadcasters content, with a major increase in App downloads in the last year.

These latest results indicate that consumers are becoming more interested in watching entertainment and news on portable devices.

The figures show that the year on year growth of Sky Apps downloads has risen to 80%, and these figures include the Sky Apps for News, Sports, Movies, and also the Sky Go and Sky + Apps.

The download figures by Sky Ireland underline a growing trend towards content consumption on smartphones and tablets. In Ireland alone, over two million Sky Apps had been downloaded by the end of May 2013.

iOS downloads amounted to 1.3 million, whereas Android downloads were in excess of 600,000. Sky + was the most downloaded App by both iOS and Android users. Blackberry phones were used to make more than 101,000 downloads of Sky Apps.

Sky’s award-winning Sky Go App allows Sky customers to view live TV on their smartphones and tablets, including being able to take advantage of the exclusive Sky Atlantic and Sky Sports F1 HD channels.

Consumers now have more freedom as to where and when they watch television, be it in another room in the house where there’s no TV, or while on the move outside.

To date there has been almost 400,000 downloads of the popular Sky Go App by customers in Ireland. This proves the growing demand by customers to have greater flexibility when it comes to watching Sky Movies, major sporting events and the best TV entertainment.

Sky customers are also able to view their favourite television show, watch new highlights, and Remote Record with the Sky + App outside of their home. A smartphone or tablet can also be transformed and become a tap-and-swipe Sky remote control. In Ireland, the Sky + App has already been downloaded more than 300,000 times.

Director of Sales & Marketing at Sky Ireland, Mark Anderson, reflected on the “massive change” in how people are now watching content. Mr. Anderson also added that the trend towards mobile downloads will only “continue to grow”.
