How do I unlock my mobile phone?

If you’ve recently come to the end of a mobile phone contract, unlocking your phone will give you freedom to shop around for a new deal.

When you sign up for a mobile phone deal, you’ll normally choose a handset to go with this. This handset is normally included free - or at a greatly reduced price - and you will have much higher monthly payments to take this into account. If your contract is up and you are still happy with your handset, it’s worth thinking about moving to a SIM-only mobile plan.

Unlocking your handset to use a new SIM

If you do decide to hang on to your handset, but are moving to a new SIM-only deal, you’ll need to unlock your handset in order for your phone to work on your new provider’s network.

To do this, you simply need to contact your current provider and ask them to unlock your phone. Mobile phone providers have different procedures for doing this, and it’s likely you’ll have to wait a certain amount of time before the process is completed, so make sure you request it before you need to make the switch to your new provider.

And, remember, you’ll only be able to get free access to this code if you’re not in contract at the moment - otherwise the provider may refuse to unlock the phone, or they’ll charge you to have it unlocked.

It may sound like hassle, but unlocking your handset could be just the ticket to save you money on your mobile phone bills.
