The average energy user is missing out on savings of up to €358 because they are not availing of the best deals that are available in the energy market at the moment.

And, if you are a high energy user, you could stand to save up to €458 per year simply by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest deal in the market.

This news comes as a report from the Commission for Energy Regulation has shown that the vast majority of gas and electricity customers are sticking with standard tariffs, despite them being more expensive.

What type of energy user are you?

We’ve identified three main energy user groups, depending on how much energy is used by the household in a year, as follows:

  • Low energy users. An average ‘low user’ is defined in terms of energy use, as using 3,700 kWhs of electricity a year and 8,600 kWhs of gas a year;
  • Medium energy users. An average ‘medium user’ uses 5,300 kWhs of electricity a year and 13, 800 kWhs of gas a year; and
  • High energy users. An average ‘high user’ uses 6,800 kWhs of electricity a year and 17,200nkWhs of gas a year.

More information on each energy user group is contained in the infographic below.

What this graphic really shows is the huge savings that so many of us are missing out on because we’re not availing of the best deals on the market.

Speaking about this, Eoin Clarke, Managing Director of Switcher.ie, said: “Energy suppliers big and small continue to battle to win customers by cutting rates, launching increasingly competitive discounts, and introducing cash back offers as high as €175.

“Unfortunately, the continuing trend that we see through reports from the CER and our own research is that only a minority of consumers are taking advantage of these deals. As a result, vast numbers are unnecessarily paying well over the odds for their energy when there are huge savings to be made.”

There are huge savings to be made by switching

As you can see from the above graphic, savings per year can range from €237 up to €458[1], depending on what kind of energy user you are.

The best way to figure out how much you can save is by using our free gas and electricity comparison tool.

You’ll just need to enter a few details about your current energy usage, which energy supplier you are currently with, and the name of your tariff.

You’ll then be presented with a list of the cheapest energy tariffs, as well as potential savings you could make by switching.

From this list, you simply need to choose the plan that’s right for you, and fill in a few details. We’ll then contact your new energy supplier and complete the switch on your behalf.
