New Horizon Phone App and Wi-Free services officially launched by UPC
Innovative free services from UPC aim to help users make cost savings on their mobile bill
UPC Ireland has announced the launch of two new services designed to help customers slash the cost of their mobile bills.
The launch of Horizon Phone App and Horizon Wi-Free comes as figures from an OECD survey show that mobile phone users in Ireland pay up to 42% more for their services when compared to other countries around the globe.
Horizon Phone App
The free Horizon Phone App, which has been trialled since January, enables users to get the most value from their UPC Home Phone, while also making savings on their smartphone bill. The app enables users to make calls for free using their UPC Home Phone call pack via their mobile, wherever there is WiFi available, whether they are at home or overseas.
This means that UPC Home Phone customers can bypass costly roaming charges when on holiday and keep in touch with friends and family without paying a penny (using their inclusive UPC Home Phone call pack).
EU roaming charges currently stand at 24 cent per minute (excluding VAT) for calls made, and 7 cent per minute for calls received, 8 cent to send a text and no more than 45 cents per MegaByte for mobile internet.
The second free service from UPC, Horizon Wi-Free is available to UPC Horizon customers. The service allows users to connect their tablet or smartphone in another household subscribed to UPC Horizon broadband using a second, separate WiFi network.
This means that users visiting others in UPC Horizon broadband households will avoid having to connect to potentially expensive 3G/4G services and won’t need to access the householders WiFi password to enjoy a broadband connection.
A trial of the service involving more than 9,000 UPC broadband customers in Limerick from January to March 2014 saw 85% of those involved outlining that they were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the service.
Commenting on the launch of the new services, Ronan McEvoy, Head of Consumer Products, UPC Ireland said: “Both services were successfully trialled with thousands of UPC customers since January, and are now ready to share with all UPC customers. Many families will be interested in these products to help to save money on their own or their children’s mobile phones.”
