Switching can put a lot more in your pocket than the Budget will

You could save hundreds by switching providers for household utilities

Budget 2018 took place yesterday, and we’ve already seen what difference the measures will make to the average consumer. And, while tax and social protection changes will have a positive impact for many consumers, most of the changes are not coming into effect until 2018, so it’ll be a while before we see the benefit.

If you want to put some extra cash in your pocket in the meantime, think about switching your gas and electricity, broadband, TV and home phone, or moving to a SIM-only mobile plan.

Switching only takes a few minutes, and the average consumer could save hundreds by doing so - Switcher.ie has all of the information you need….

Save €324 by switching gas and electricity supplier

In the past few weeks, we’ve seen energy price increase announcements from SSE Airtricity, Bord Gáis Energy, and Electric Ireland, on top of the PSO Levy increase, which came into effect from 1 October.

But the market is still competitive, with huge discounts available from certain suppliers. At the moment, an average gas and electricity customer on standard tariffs can save up to €324 per year by switching to the best deals on the market - and if you have higher consumption, you could make an even bigger saving.

Get a better deal on your broadband, TV and phone and save hundreds

If you have a broadband, TV and home phone package, and you’ve been with the same provider for a while, the chances are you’re paying full price for your plan.

By switching, you could land yourself a nice introductory discount - eir, Sky, Virgin Media, and Vodafone regularly have promotions for new customers, which could save you hundreds, depending on the plan you go for.

If you are thinking about switching, consider whether you need all of the elements of your plan - for example, do you watch all of the TV channels that come with your package?

If not, another way to make a saving would be to downgrade your TV package, or opt for a broadband-only deal if you mostly stream content via the likes of Netflix.

When you sign a mobile contract, often the cost of the handset is built into the plan. But, with a lot of providers, you continue paying the same monthly cost long after the handset is paid off.

If you’re out of contract and are still happy with your handset, switching to a SIM-only dea could save you a packet. SIM-only plans start from just €6, so when you consider that most plans that include a handset come in around the €50 mark, you’d be looking at a huge saving over the year.

If you’re handset is already paid off, you can also move to a SIM-only deal with your current provider, rather than rolling on your contract which includes the cost of your handset. It’s worth mentioning that some providers - like Virgin Mobile - will automatically move you to a SIM-only plan when your phone is paid for, which is great.

Switching energy, broadband and SIM-only plans only takes a few minutes, so set aside some time to do so - you’ll be enjoying cheaper bills in no time!
