What is Sky On Demand?
All you need to know about Sky’s On Demand digital TV service
The Sky On Demand service is one of Sky’s most popular and best known features amongst its customers in Ireland.
With on demand TV services customers are able to enjoy a huge range of shows and films, available for viewing anytime on a variety of devices, including, home computers, tablets, smart phones and even video games consoles.
Sky On Demand allows you to have complete control over when and what you want to watch all at the touch of a button and at no extra cost too. Unlike traditional programming where everyone follows a predetermined viewing schedule, you can start watching whatever you want, whenever you want.
Features and benefits
Previously known as Anywhere+ Sky’s on demand service was officially launched in Ireland in October 2012. On Demand allows you to connect a compatible Sky+ box to any broadband router to enjoy TV on demand, all at no extra monthly cost to your Sky TV subscription.
With on demand you can watch continuous back to back episodes of full series box sets, explore a showcase of the week’s best TV, enjoy hundreds of the best movies available on demand with the Sky Cinema Pack and rent movies through your Sky+ HD box with Sky Store (additional purchase required), with everything ready to watch when you want it.
What’s available with Sky On Demand
The service has four main features to help customers navigate and browse through the extensive range of TV and movie content available to view at any time.
Showcase - This category showcases a weekly roundup of some of the most popular TV shows with Sky TV viewers. Customers can access a wide range of shows from popular TV channels like Sky 1, Sky Atlantic Sky Living and Sky Arts. Watch the very best of the week’s TV, also available in stunning high definition if you’ve subscribed to the HD pack.
TV Library - Similar to Showcase but with even more TV content to choose from. Immerse yourself in back to back episodes of the top shows available on Sky, with entire series box-sets.
Movies - From all time classics to family favourites or the latest blockbusters, watch whatever you want whenever you want with over 500 movies on demand and more added every week.
Sky Store - Choose from over 1000 movies, documentaries and special features to rent through your Sky+ HD box. All you need to do is connect your Sky+ box to a broadband router in your home and visit the Sky store.
How to use Sky On Demand
The service has been designed to be intuitive and simple to use. Once everything has been set up, use your existing Sky remote control to start watching shows on demand. Press the TV guide and then the red button to access programmes. The main On Demand home page has the following four features:
Categories Programmes are organised by category tabs for you to quickly find what you want to watch. Not sure what you want? Browse the “Most Popular” sections within each tab for inspiration and ideas.
Play now Allows you to start watching instantaneously without lengthy downloads and buffering lead times. Please note not all programmes have play now enabled.
Programme Thumbnails Visual thumbnail images of programmes in the On Demand menu, together with keywords and short descriptions allow you to quickly search and find the programmes you want to watch
Previews You’ll also be able to preview trailers to the highlighted programmes by pressing the red button on your Sky remote.
Connect and enable On Demand through self setup either wired or wirelessly. A wired connection is recommended if your compatible Sky+ box and broadband router are physically close together. Alternatively you can go wireless if you prefer less cabling clutter, or if your Sky+ box and broadband router are in different rooms.
A wired connection requires an ethernet cable (Cat 5, RJ45 connector), a compatible Sky+ box and a working broadband router and internet connection. Follow the four steps below to complete setup:
Make sure your broadband router is switched on. Check the internet connection light is on.
One end of the ethernet cable should be connected to an unused port on your broadband router.
Connect the other end of the same ethernet cable to the green port on the back of your Sky+ box.
That’s it! The last step in the process is a check to make sure everything is working. With your existing remote control, press the tv guide button, and then the red button to enter the On Demand menu. Each individual programme should be shown with its own thumbnail preview picture, indicating that connection is successful and setup is complete. On Demand is ready to go!
Using a wireless connection
A wireless connection requires a compatible Sky+ box, a wireless broadband router and internet connection and a Wireless Connector - available from the Sky Shop at €12.99. Follow the simple steps below to complete setup:
Make sure your wireless broadband router is switched on. Check the internet and wireless connection lights are both on.
Connect the green port on the Wireless Connector to the green port on the back of your Sky+ box using the supplied ethernet cable.
Connect the supplied power adaptor to the blue port on the Wireless Connector to any available power socket.
Switch on the Wireless Connector by the power socket and the power button on the back of the unit. Check that both the power and ethernet lights come on.
You should see an onscreen prompt asking you to enable broadband services and connect to your wireless network. If you don’t see this message, press services on your Sky remote and scroll to Settings, then Network to enable wireless connections.
Once connected, you’ll see a confirmation on screen. Check that you’ve chosen the right wireless network and entered the correct password if the Local Connection and Service Connection displays failed status. You may need to go through step 5 above again if this happens.
Finally, the last step in the process is a check to make sure everything is working. With your existing remote control, press the tv guide button, and then the red button to enter the On Demand menu. Each individual programme should be shown with its own thumbnail preview picture, indicating that connection is successful and setup is complete. On Demand is ready to go!
