Meet Virgin Media - Ireland’s newest quad play provider

Learn more about the reasons for the Virgin Media business transformation, quad play and future plans

UPC Ireland is to become Virgin Media and from Monday, October 5, all UPC Ireland operations, products and services - residential and business - will transform into Virgin Media.

As well as this business transition, the provider also announced the arrival of mobile services, meaning customers can bundle their broadband, home phone, digital TV and mobile phone with Virgin Media.

Ahead of the launch, we spoke with Magnus Ternsjö, CEO of Virgin Media, about the reasons for the business transition, quad play, and what new and existing customers can expect to see in the future.

Q. Going forward UPC will be known as Virgin Media. Can you explain the reasons behind this business transformation?

A. This is about making what’s already great even better. Since 2006, UPC Ireland has invested over €500 million in upgrading its network to a next generation access network. As a result, UPC Ireland pioneered the introduction of triple play product offerings of digital TV, ultrafast broadband and phone bundles in Ireland.

UPC Ireland has consistently led the pack delivering the best broadband speeds and offering the best connected entertainment for our customers. We’ve also led the way in offering market leading products and services to our business customers. We are recognised as the best broadband provider in Ireland for the past two years running.

Transforming UPC Ireland to Virgin Media is further testament to the continued commitment of our parent Liberty Global plc to its Irish operations. It is not just a rebrand, it is truly the start of a transformational journey. Liberty Global is the world’s largest international cable operators. Virgin Media is now the name of Liberty Global’s business operations in Ireland and in the UK.

In almost every corner of the world, the Virgin brand is famous for its entrepreneurial spirit in delivering more for customers. UPC Ireland intends to leverage the power of the Virgin brand to help us build on our achievements of the past and to take our business to the next level. We have some exciting plans in the pipeline to step up competition for consumers which we will announce in due course.

Q. Can you describe Virgin Media’s USPs in one sentence?

Simple, considerate and we will do more for our customers.

Q. Virgin Media was the first quad play provider in the UK, and is the second entrant into the Irish quad play market. What does the availability of quad play mean for Irish consumers?

A. The launch of Virgin Media Ireland coincides with the launch of our new mobile offering which means we are now a quad play provider (digital TV, broadband, mobile, landline) with the most competitive mobile service and a market leading offer for our customers.

Transforming into Virgin Media forms part of our strategy to build locally while serving the needs of our customers by leveraging our global scale as the world’s largest international cable company.

Q. What will Virgin Media bring to the Irish broadband market that UPC did not?

A. We will bring the best mobile offer! That is special. UPC Ireland was named Best Broadband Provider (for the second year running) at the annual Switcher Broadband Awards in April 2015. UPC was also named as the provider of Fastest Home Broadband, Best Customer Rated Home Broadband and Most Recommended Broadband.

Virgin Media marks a new journey for UPC. The transformation of the UPC Ireland business into Virgin Media Ireland reaffirms our commitment to keep our customers at the centre of everything we do and we will now work harder to do more in a considerate way for our valuable customers.

We’ll continue to break barriers with Ireland’s best broadband and best connected entertainment. We are known for bringing great products to the Irish market, that will continue and we have a range of exciting products in the pipeline. As well as digital TV, ultrafast broadband and phone, we now have the most competitive mobile service and an overall market leading offer for our customers. This all forms part of our strategy to build locally while serving our customers using the many advantages of our global presence as part of the world’s largest international cable company.

Q. What can new and existing customers expect to see from Virgin Media in the future?

A. For us it is about doing what is already great simply even better with a significant focus on our existing customers! The latter is proven with a brilliant offer of mobile, only to existing customers. We’ll continue to break barriers with Ireland’s best broadband and the best connected entertainment. As well as digital TV, ultrafast broadband and phone, we now have the most competitive mobile service and an overall market leading offer for our customers. And for the first time we will have a service that is also nationwide, ie coverage outside of our physical broadband network, so consumers who are not yet customers, can find out what it means to be part of a Virgin Media company.
