How to get cheaper home insurance

Cut your monthly bills - shop around and choose the right home insurance cover.

Shop around for a better deal

A good way to save money on your home insurance is to shop around every year. Loyalty often doesn’t pay, as many insurers offer discounts to entice new customers. Compare quotes and switch to cut the cost of your premiums.

Pick the right excess

Increasing your excess means you pay a lower monthly premium. If you reduce the excess, you’ll pay a higher sum each month. Be aware that if you increase your excess, you’ll need to contribute more when you make a claim.

Get a multi-policy discount

You could bag a multi policy discount when you buy two types of insurance from the same insurer. For example if you already have car insurance, you could get up to 15% off the second policy.

Pay upfront

Paying a larger, lump sum up front as opposed to by direct debit each month can lessen the overall cost of your home insurance. You could save up to 15-20% each year.

Only 1 in 4 households adjust insurance after renovating

Most Irish households don’t adjust their insurance policies after renovating their homes.

New research reveals that over 70%* of households who modified homes didn’t renew their policies afterward, with many discovering they are underinsured.

Customers who are under-insured and who make a claim under their policy may not be fully protected and may not receive the full amount necessary to rebuild or repair their home.

“Underinsurance is an issue currently,” said Deirdre Ashe, Managing Director of Bank of Ireland Insurance Services. “As we move into the winter months it’s important for homeowners to review their insurance policies.”
