A guide to Virgin Media broadband
Thinking of switching to Virgin Media? We’ve got all of the information you’ll need on broadband speeds, packages and prices.
Virgin Media offers a variety of broadband packages and plans, starting from just €49 per month. Many of Virgin Media’s plans come with great introductory discounts, and contracts for most plans are 12 months.
What packages can you get with Virgin Media?
Virgin Media broadband and phone plans
If you don’t need a TV package, one of Virgin Media’s broadband and phone plans could be a good option for you.
Virgin Media owns and runs its own fibre network, and offers plans with speeds of up to 240Mbps and up to 500Mbps, so you’ll need to decide which you want before signing up.
You’ll also need to decide whether you’re happy with unlimited anytime calls to Irish landlines and mobiles, or you also need unlimited minutes to 22 international destinations, including the USA and Canada.
Virgin Media TV-only plans
If you don’t want to go with Virgin Media broadband for whatever reason, but are interested in a TV-package, Virgin Media does have TV-only plans available.
- Pause, rewind, record and store all your favourite shows.
- Record 4 shows, while watching a 5th.
- Enjoy hundreds of movies and TV shows.
- Watch Netflix directly through the TV box.
You can also choose to add on Sky Sports or Sky Cinema if you’d like, for an additional monthly cost.
Virgin Media broadband, phone and TV plans
If you want a TV package along with your broadband and phone, Virgin Media has lots of triple-play deals to choose from, which start from just €59 per month.

On top of its broadband, phone and TV plans, Virgin Media also offers a range of mobile plans.
There are two distinct SIM-only plans from Virgin Mobile, to suit light and heavy users, and there are often discounts available for existing customers, too.
Virgin Mobile is pretty flexible - if you like, you can move to a cheaper plan, or add on extra minutes, texts and data, at any stage - and the change will take effect on your next billing date.
What do I get if I sign up to Virgin Media? Are there any extras?
When you sign up to Virgin Media broadband, you’ll get the Virgin Media Hub router included absolutely free, as well as free connection and free delivery. This modem has been independently tested and was found to deliver great WiFi performance, which is really useful if you live in a busy household with lots of connected devices.
Another feature available to Virgin Media customers is a Red House visit, where technicians from Virgin Media can visit your home to fine-tune the set-up of your broadband and TV, connect all devices, upgrade equipment, and sort any issues you might be having. If you request a Red House Experience there will be a charge of €50.
Virgin Media customers can also access any of the Bitbuzz Hotspots in Ireland and in the UK for free.
Virgin Media’s best deals and costs
Virgin Media’s cheapest package is the Naked 250 and World Unlimited Home Phone package, which costs €49 for the first 6 months, and €64 thereafter. This could be a good option if you like to stream content and don’t watch any traditional TV.
If you do want a package that includes broadband, TV and phone all in one, the Virgin Mix 250 plan could be a good option for you. This comes in at €59 for the first 12 months, and €89 thereafter.
Remember, if you sign up to a package that includes TV, you can also add-on Sky Sports or Sky Cinema - or both - for an additional monthly charge.
Virgin Media speeds
Virgin Media has some of the fastest speeds in Ireland, and won the ‘Fastest Broadband Provider’ award at the 2019 Switcher.ie Awards, after achieving the highest speeds on average across thousands of real customer speed tests taken on Switcher.ie. The provider has also been named the fastest provider in Ireland for three years running by Ookla.
Its fastest plans go up to 500Mbps, so they’re a great option if you’re looking for superfast broadband. If you don’t want a 500Mbps plan, there are also plans available with speeds up to 360Mbps which will still provide you with a great connection and speeds.
Why choose Virgin Media?
There are many reasons why a Virgin Media plan might suit you:
- Virgin Media has been named Ireland’s fastest broadband provider by Ookla for 3 years running, and picked up three awards at the 2019 Switcher.ie Awards.
- Virgin Media operates its own network, so you’ll get full support if any network issues arise.
- Virgin Media is a quad-play provider, meaning you can bundle your broadband, TV, phone and mobile plans if you’d like.
Virgin Media things to be aware of
The main disadvantage of Virgin Media is that it’s simply not as widely available as broadband from other providers who operate on the open eir network. You can check if Virgin Media plans are available in your area on our comparison tool.
You should fully review your options before you sign up to any Virgin Media plan. Most Virgin Media packages have 12-month contracts, so make sure you check any discount period - and the price after the discount ends - before signing up.
I am an existing customer - are there any Virgin Media upgrade deals?
If you’re an existing Virgin Media customer, you can upgrade your plan, add on different elements - such as broadband or TV - and include extra channels, like Sky Cinema and Sky Sports, with no hassle. You’ll also usually get discounts on Virgin Media’s SIM-only plans.
The best bet would be to contact Virgin Media directly to discuss your options if you’re an existing customer.
Virgin Media broadband v eir v Sky v Vodafone
If you’re not sure which broadband provider to go for, it’s worth noting that Virgin Media owns its own network, so you’ll get full support if any network issues arise.
Virgin Media’s plans also have higher ‘up to’ speeds than the majority of plans from eir, Sky and Vodafone, who operate most of their plans off the open eir wholesale network.
How can I switch to Virgin Media Broadband?
Switching to a Virgin Media plan is quick and easy. All you need to do is choose which plan you’re interested in and fill in a few details, including your address and bank details. Virgin Media will also look for your Universal Account Number, which is an eight digit number used by telecom providers to identify phone lines.
Make sure you contact your current provider to ensure you’re free to switch, and give them the required notice so that you’re not charged after you’ve switched. You’ll be able to arrange a cut-off date with them for service and then you can confirm an installation date with Virgin Media so you experience as little downtime as possible. Once the switch happens, you can then cancel any Direct Debits with your current provider.
