How do I watch Amazon Prime Video?
Once you have signed up, you can watch Amazon Prime Video on:
- Android phones and tablets;
- iOS phones and tablets;
- Fire tablets;
- some LG and Samsung smart TVs; and
- online at PrimeVideo.com.
Amazon Prime Video is available in English, with French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish subtitled and dubbed versions also available for many titles.
Will watching online use up all of my data?
It’s well known that streaming generally does use quite a lot of data - so if you don’t have an unlimited data plan, make sure you set an alarm on your device so you’re alerted when you’ve nearly reached your data limit.
On Prime Video, you can control how much data you use when streaming and downloading video by choosing the visual quality that you want - the options are ‘Good’, ‘Better’ and ‘Best’.
In addition, Amazon Prime Video also has the ability to select the best streaming configurations, based on your device, location and Internet Service Provider.
However, if you are worried about your data allowance, the service allows you to download all movies and TV shows for offline viewing, so you could download what you want to watch while you’re in a WiFi area and not use streaming at all if that suits you best.
Netflix has also recently introduced download functionality, but at the moment it’s only available for some titles.
What sort of titles are available on Amazon Prime Video?
The best-known new title available through the service is probably The Grand Tour, with Top Gear favourites Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.
In addition to this, there are award-winning series like Transparent, and Mozart in the Jungle, as well as Amazon Original Series The Man in the High Castle. There’s also lots of Kids TV, including Creative Galaxy and Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street.
Prime Video members can also watch hundreds of popular movies and TV shows from top networks and Hollywood studios, and the following new titles will be added next year:
- Woody Allen’s Crisis in Six Scenes;
- Goliath, featuring Billy Bob Thornton;
- Docuseries American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story; and
- Sneaky Pete produced by Bryan Cranston and Graham Yost.
Changing viewing habits
Many of us are now watching more-and-more TV on-demand or online, rather than live as it airs on TV.
It will be interesting to see if this new entrant in the streaming market will have an additional impact on this.
