eir Sport to expand coverage of Allianz Leagues
In an Irish broadcasting first, three live games will be shown simultaneously across eir Sport channels.
Last week, eir announced details of eir Sport’s coverage of the forthcoming Allianz Leagues.
In great news for GAA fans, this year will see more games featured than ever before and, as well as this, eir Sport will be the first Irish broadcaster to show three live games simultaneously across its channels.
In order to make this possible, eir applied to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland for two new channels – eir Sport 1 Extra and eir Sport 2 Extra. These were approved last Thursday.
Allianz League action kicks off this weekend
The action gets underway this Saturday, 4 February with a triple-header of football clashes starting at 7pm:
- Mayo v Monaghan,
- Down v Fermanagh , and
- Laois v Louth.
This is the first of five triple headers which will be broadcast as part of eir Sport’s coverage of the 2017 Allianz Leagues.
When triple headers are on, eir broadband customers can watch via the eir Sport app - as usual - while eir Vision customers can check them out on the usual eir Sport channels, or on the new ‘Extra’ channels, depending on the game.
Sky customers will get a different game on the SD and HS eir Sport channels when these triple headers are taking place.
eir Sport will be broadcasting a total of 23 live games, an increase from the 17 which have previously been broadcast.
Two of the biggest clashes will see a replay of the 2016 All-Ireland finals - Dublin take on Mayo on 4 March, while Tipperary and Kilkenny meet on 11 March .
Making broadcasting history
Speaking at the announcement, Glen Killane, eir’s Managing Director TV and Sport said that the quality and quantity of eir Sport’s live GAA content for the 2017 Allianz Leagues is “better than it has ever been”.
He added: “We have worked hard to develop our offering and make broadcasting history by showing three live games simultaneously for the first time.”
Accessing eir Sport
eir Sport launched last summer and is free for all eir broadband customers.
At the moment, eir’s Broadband & Pay as You Use Home Phone + eir Sport plan costs €50 per month on a 12-month contract.
It offers unlimited 100Mb fibre broadband and the eir Sport pack comes free.
Meanwhile, the eir Vision TV Essential & Broadband + eir Sport plan comes with 100Mb fibre broadband, 55 TV channels, and unlimited anytime calls to Irish and UK landlines & mobiles.
This plan is currently reduced to €30 per month for the first 6 months, going up to €85 thereafter. This represents a saving of €330 in the year - and of course you’ll also get eir Sport free.
