Irish sports fans rejoice as Sky strikes deal with BT Sport

Ireland to gain access to BT’s variety of sports channels from summer 2019.

Pay-TV in Ireland just got a whole lot better for Irish Sports fans with Sky and BT announcing a new partnership - giving viewers in Ireland access to BT’s range of sports channels.

Sky will becomes BT’s official ‘exclusive distribution partner’ in a move to extend BT’s UK content to Ireland - with BT Sports becoming available to Irish viewers via their Sky television subscription from summer 2019.

Sky and BT say the deal is a long term extension and expansion of a wider arrangement that was agreed for the UK market in December last year. That initial arrangement meant Sky and BT would agree to cross-share content across the two platforms in a bid to increase competition with streaming services like Amazon and Netflix.

Although the December agreement did not give Ireland access to BT content, the latest deal will give sports fans in the Emerald Isle access to 180 Premier League games, the Uefa Champions League and Europa League, and the rugby Heineken Cup all through a single Sky subscription from next summer.

JD Buckley, managing director of Sky Ireland, welcomed the new partnership, saying: “This is fantastic news for Sky customers in Ireland”.

If this sounds like something you would like to avail of when the deal comes into play next year, you’ll need to make sure you’re signed up to a Sky TV package. You can easily compare Sky packages on to find out which package is best suited to your needs.
