Annual gas bills set to increase by €30

Consumers faced with more gas price hikes

Gas bills are set to increase by €30 from October 2013, it has been announced.

The measure is the latest in a series of hikes, following on from a price increase in October which added €70 to annual customer bills. The average gas bill currently stands at €950 per year.

Almost £2 billion will be spent in the next five years to improve the infrastructure in Ireland. The costs are paid by gas suppliers and normally passed on to residential customers.

A spokesman for the Commission for Energy Regulation blamed the cost of borrowing money to pay for the improvements, stating that if borrowing costs were lower, the impact on customers would be significantly reduced.
