* The "download" speed displayed in Mb is the maximum possible speed you are likely to receive for this product. The actual speed you will get depends on your cabling, your area and (with non-fibre optic products) time of day and how far you are from the telephone exchange. Most providers will tell you the likely speed you will receive when you begin your online sign up - this may differ from the speed displayed in the table. Broadband, home phone and digital TV products are subject to availability at your location.

Broadband and Digital TV Explained

Broadband and TV bundles include a broadband deal, along with a TV plan, all in one package from the same provider.

Broadband and TV explained

If you’re not sure whether or not you need a broadband and TV package, think about what your needs are. Most of us now require broadband at home. Whether or not you need a bundle will depend on if you watch a lot of traditional TV. If so, you will usually make decent savings by getting your broadband and TV from the same provider.

Broadband and TV deals normally include:

  • Home broadband in a variety of speeds, depending on what’s available in your area.
  • A variety of TV channels - and the ability to add on sports, Sky Cinema etc.
  • Features like the ability to pause, rewind and record live TV.

Some of these TV & Broadband packages also come with a home phone plan included.

Why should I bundle my TV and broadband?

As mentioned above, if you need both broadband and TV, you will make savings by getting them both from the same provider.

It also means you will have just one provider to deal with on any issues, and one bill coming in each month.

What should I think about when signing up to a TV and broadband deal?

When you’re comparing broadband and TV packages, there are a few things to think about.

  • Price. For most people, price will be the most important factor when it comes to choosing a broadband package. There are some very good deals to choose from in the Irish market now, with huge discounts available on certain plans, especially when you sign up to a new provider.
  • Broadband speed. Research shows that, after price, speed is the most important thing to consumers when they’re choosing between broadband providers. The speed you can get will depend on the broadband provider you go for and the type of broadband available where you live.
  • TV channels. You will need to decide what channels you can’t live without, and make sure you opt for a plan that covers these channels. You should also consider whether or not you want any extras, like sports channels or Sky Cinema.
  • Contract length. Most broadband and TV packages have 12-18 month contracts. Make sure to check this before you sign up, and take note of when your discount period ends, and how much you will pay after that so you can budget for it.
  • Installation costs. Look at the installation costs, as well as the monthly costs when you’re comparing deals. Some providers offer free installation, while with others there’ll be an upfront charge.

Are there other types of broadband bundles?

There are several different options in terms of bundles, depending on what your needs are.

Broadband and phone packages

If you don’t require a TV package, but you do want a home phone plan, think about signing up to to a broadband and phone package:

  • You will usually save by bundling broadband and phone.
  • Providers sometimes require you to have a phone line in order to provide you with broadband, so adding on home phone can be convenient.
  • You’ll only need to deal with one provider, instead of several.

Digiweb, eir, Magnet, Pure Telecom, Sky, Virgin Media and Vodafone all offer these types of bundles.

Broadband, TV and phone deals

If you want to opt for broadband and TV, but also require a home phone, you could go for what’s known as a ‘triple-play’ deal. The main providers of broadband, TV and home phone bundles are eir, Sky, Virgin Media and Vodafone.

Again, bundling these services will generally save you money, when compared to getting them all from separate providers. It’s also convenient to only have to deal with one provider, rather than different ones for each service.

Can I get a TV-only package?

Say you find the perfect broadband deal for you, but that provider doesn’t offer TV, or their TV plans don’t work for you. If that’s the case, you could always opt for a broadband-only plan from one provider and a TV-only deal from someone else. There are some great Digital TV deals out there, and many providers offer discounts to new customers signing up.

How do I switch broadband and TV?

Once you’ve decided to switch, you’ll need to submit an application form for your new broadband and TV product.

Soon, you’ll hear from your new provider, who’ll confirm your application and may ask you for some additional details to help to set up your account with them.

You are then responsible for cancelling your broadband and TV account with your current provider. You will need to give your current provider the relevant notice - as stated in your contract - in order to ensure you can switch without any penalties.

When you contact your current provider, you should also arrange a date to close off your account. Once the account is closed off, you can then cancel all Direct Debits to this provider.

You should also agree an installation date with your new provider, to ensure you avoid any interruption in broadband or TV service.
