How to check outdoor coverage where you live

ComReg (The Commission for Communications Regulation) has created an outdoor mobile coverage map that makes it easy to check coverage and signal levels of all the networks at your Eircode.

You check coverage by 2G, 3G, 4G (voice calls, texts and data) and 5G (voice calls, texts and superfast data). Bear in mind that results aren’t guaranteed and are based on outdoor coverage only, which may differ from inside your home or office.

How good is 5G coverage in Ireland?

If you’re looking for superfast, real-time connections, 5G offers speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G, but it’s not as widely available in Ireland. Find out more about the benefits of 5G and whether it’s right for you in our guide How 5G works in Ireland.

To find out if 5G has rolled out in your area, go to these mobile providers for the latest coverage data:

Tips for choosing the right provider

Here are a few things to do to ensure you get a good phone signal and the best mobile coverage for your needs:

  • Enter your Eircode in the outdoor mobile coverage map to check which network signal is the strongest in your area
  • Consider where you use the phone most, for example, you may need to check coverage at your office as well as your home
  • Decide whether 5G is vital for your needs or if good 4G coverage is most important
  • Ask for recommendations from family, friends and neighbours living in the same area

If you find that the coverage is poor when you switch providers, you should be protected by a 14-day cooling-off period.

Some networks like Vodafone offer a network satisfaction guarantee so you can cancel within 30 days and get your money back. Always check the full terms before signing up.

Mobile coverage in Ireland FAQs

Do budget providers like GoMo, 48 have worse coverage?

No. Budget providers are Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) so they do not own physical masts.

Instead, they rent space on the main networks. You get the exact same coverage and signal quality as the parent network, usually for a fraction of the price. Always verify your new budget provider’s network partner before switching.

Can I check the mobile signal at my specific address?

Do not rely on generic coverage claims or an operator’s own marketing maps.

The most reliable method is to use the official, independent ComReg Outdoor Mobile Coverage Map. By inputting your specific address or Eircode, you can view an unbiased breakdown of 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G signal availability for every network at your exact location.

Why do I have a poor signal inside my house when outdoor coverage is supposedly 99%?

Network operators calculate their “99% population coverage” metrics based entirely on outdoor signals.

However, many other factors affect mobile coverage, including building materials, terrain, the number of users, and distance from the mast.

Indoor blackspots are rarely the network’s fault but are usually caused by factors such as building Insulation. Modern construction standards require foil-backed insulation, thick concrete blocks, and double or triple-glazed windows, all of which reflect and block mobile radio waves.

If you have a poor indoor signal but decent home broadband, ensure your mobile plan supports Wi-Fi Calling. This feature automatically routes your standard mobile voice calls and SMS texts over your home Wi-Fi network. .
