Mobile networks in Ireland

In Ireland, the mobile market is built on three main infrastructure owners, known as Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and eight active Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs).

While you might see many different names on your phone screen, they all run on one of the three physical networks.

Mobile Network Operators (MNOs)

These companies own the actual cell towers and radio masts across the country.

Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs)

These providers “rent” network capacity from the big three above. Some are independent companies, while others, such as Clear Mobile and GoMo, are owned by the MNOs to target budget-conscious customers.

Which Irish networks offer 5G?

The availability of 5G in Ireland is now good. Most budget-friendly operators like GoMo and 48 now include 5G as standard, while some independent MVNOs still treat it as a premium add-on or don’t offer it at all.

To use 5G, you need a 5G-enabled handset and you must be in a 5G coverage area. Even if your plan says “5G,” your phone will drop back to 4G in rural areas where the 5G signal hasn’t reached yet.

Comparing mobile providers

At Switcher.ie, we compare networks and plans so you can find the best deal to suit you.

Take a look at our SIM-only comparison to see the best plans for every network.

When you’re comparing networks and plans, think about:

  • Coverage: If you have a mobile phone, a good reception is crucial. If you’re not sure which networks have the best coverage in Ireland, our mobile coverage guide can help.
  • Type of plan: Unlimited deals allow you to call, text and surf as much as you like. Capped deals are sometimes cheaper, but you get a set number of minutes, texts and data.
  • Price: This is usually the most important factor. If the plan has an initial discount, make sure you also consider the ongoing monthly cost after it ends.

If you’re unsure how much data you really need, check your mobile phone account to see how much you normally use each month. It may be lower than you think.

Consider whether you want to bundle your mobile plan with other services like broadband, phone and TV. Some broadband providers, including eir, Three and Virgin Media, offer discounts on mobile plans to their broadband customers.

Our SIM-only comparison tool makes it simple to find a mobile SIM-only deal. We compare SIM-only deals from the top Irish networks so you can choose the best plans available in Ireland.
