The NOW TV Smart Stick launches on Monday - and it's the cheapest streaming device in Ireland
The NOW TV Smart Stick comes in at just €25 per month
NOW TV has announced that the NOW TV Smart Stick - with HD and Voice Search - will launch in Ireland on Monday, 18 June.
This is a brand-new ‘plug and play’ style device, which connects directly into the HDMI port of your TV and gives you easy access to your NOW TV content.
Now much is the NOW TV Smart Stick and where can I get it?
New to the Irish market, the NOW TV Smart Stick will be the cheapest streaming device in Ireland - it’ll set you back just €25, and you’ll get a free 14-day trial of NOW TV, too.
You’ll be able to buy the NOW TV Smart Stick on the NOW TV website from Monday, and you’ll also be able to purchase it from some of the usual retailers - like Harvey Norman, DID Electrical and Currys/PC World - too.
As well as buying the Smart Stick on its own, there will also be the option to bundle it with NOW TV Passes in ‘Stick and Pass’ bundles to get the package that suits you best. For example, you can get the Smart Stick with:
- a two-month NOW TV Entertainment Pass - which allows you to watch 11 of the best pay TV channels (including Sky Atlantic) and over 300 binge-worthy Box Sets including Game of Thrones - for €39.99.
- a two-month Sky Cinema Pass - which gives you access to all of the Sky Cinema channels, as well as 1,000 movies on demand - for €39.99.
- A one-month NOW TV Entertainment Pass and one-month Sky Cinema Pass along with one-month Sky Kids Pass (which gives you access to popular children’s shows from Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon) and one-week Sky Sports Pass (which allows you to watch all of the Sky Sports channels) for €49.99.
What comes with the NOW TV Smart Stick and how does it work?
When you buy the NOW TV Smart Stick, you’ll get the stick itself, as well as a plug and power cable, a remote control and batteries.
To use the Smart Stick, all you need to do is plug it into the HDMI port of your TV and follow the instructions - basically you’ll need to firstly connect to your WiFi at home and then sign in to your NOW TV account (if you don’t have one of these yet, you can sign up here).
After that, the interface is pretty intuitive, so you shouldn’t have any issues - basically you navigate on the left-hand side and click ‘OK’ to select the menu item or show you want to watch.
If you find something you’re interested in, but you don’t want to watch just yet, there’s also a handy feature where you can add content to your home screen, which will save you time scrolling to find it again.
Another time-saving feature is the voice search technology that’s built into the remote, which is pretty cool - it helps you to quickly find your favourite shows, films, actors or directors, without needing to spend ages typing information into the search bar.
The Smart Stick basically turns your TV into a smart TV, so - on top of being able to access your NOW TV Pass content - you can also access apps including All 4, TV3’s 3Player, YouTube, Sky Store and Sky Sports Box Office. Later this year, Sky will also launch Netflix as a standalone app on the Smart Stick and the NOW TV box.
What else is new with NOW TV?
Since its launch in April 2017, there have been plenty of changes to the NOW TV offering.
Recently, it has launched a Kids Pass, which allows you to watch 1000s episodes of kids TV from the likes of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network on demand with no adverts. This Pass costs just €7 a month, and there’s a 14-day free trial available too.
There are parental controls available on the Smart Stick which help to stop your little one navigating away from the Kids content and onto other areas of the interface, and you can also put a PIN lock on any content over a certain age rating, if you wish.
With holidays coming up, you might be pleased to hear that NOW TV now has EU portability, so you can log in from anywhere within the EU and watch your content while you’re abroad.
And, to make sure it’s not eating up your WiFi, NOW TV also announced it will be rolling out downloads to the NOW TV app across mobile devices for its kids, entertainment and cinema passes in the coming months.
On top of all this, there’s also now functionality available which allows you to pick up wherever you left off with shows, no matter what device you sign in on - so you can pause a show halfway through on the Smart Stick, and next time you log in from your tablet you can continue watching it on there, if you want.
Anything else I need to know?
While this is not related to functionality, Sky is keen to point out that the packaging for the NOW TV Smart Stick has been produced without any single use plastic as part of Sky’s commitment to be plastic free by 2020. A nice benefit for the environmentally-conscious among us!
