Man watching TV

Do you make the most of the services with your TV plan?

There is a huge array of services available with TV packages these days.

Recent research published by Switcher.ie shows that the way we’re watching TV is changing.

Although two in five still watch the majority of their TV live, lots of us are now mostly watching recorded shows or on-demand content, as well as using streaming services like Netflix.

You may not be aware of all of the services available with your TV package, which could mean you’re paying for add-ons you don’t use.

Lots of the additional features can be really useful, so here’s a low-down of some of the more common ones.

1. Pause, rewind or record live TV

86% of people surveyed as part of Switcher.ie’s research said they have this functionality with their TV package.

It’s really straightforward to use, too - if you don’t quite catch something that was said during your favourite show, or want to grab a cup of tea in the middle of a movie, you can simply rewind or pause using your TV remote.

Recording requires a bit more effort - you’ll need to navigate to the TV guide, find the show or movie you want to record and hit the record button. If you select a show that is part of a series, you’ll be asked whether you want to record the whole series or just a single episode.

This can be really handy if you’re not sure you’ll be home at the same time each week to catch your favourite show - or if you prefer to binge watch.

2. Free boxsets

Some providers, like Sky and Virgin Media, offer complete box sets of TV series from the UK and US as part of their TV plans.

If you like the idea of having a full series to tuck into - like you would with Netflix or other streaming services - this could be a good feature for you.

3. Apps that allow you to watch TV on the move

All TV providers now offer apps as part of their TV packages. These are generally available through the app stores on iPhone and Android devices.

The apps allow you to watch live TV, catch up on your favourite show and manage your recordings while you’re on the move.

Just make sure you are on WiFi if you’re streaming lots of content while you’re out and about!

4. Multi-room viewing

For an additional fee, TV providers will offer you the option of installing a second set-top box so that two people can watch TV in different rooms simultaneously.

If you have a large household with lots of people competing for the remote, this could be a good option for you!

Make the most of your TV package

Whatever TV deal you have, make sure you make the most of it - aside from the use of additional features, the research shows that the majority of us are paying for dozens of channels we don’t watch.
