Report shows Ireland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe for broadband

The average package price in Ireland is €60.57 per month

Earlier this week, research company BDRC Continental and UK website Cable.co.uk released findings into the cost of broadband across almost 200 countries - and the differences between countries are stark.

When you take all countries in Europe, the country with the most expensive broadband package is Malta, with an average price of €83.27 per month. Meanwhile, the cheapest is Romania, coming in at €11.48 per month.

Ireland is amongst the most expensive countries, with an average cost of €60.57 per month - and we’ve had recent price increase announcements from the four biggest providers in the market, too. Our closest neighbour, the UK, has an average monthly package cost of just €34.41 per month.

What can I do to cut my broadband costs?

While the findings are a little disheartening, especially when you consider that many of us are still struggling with sub-par speeds, there are some things you can do to cut down on your broadband costs.

Switch to a cheaper broadband plan

By far the easiest way to save on your broadband bills is to switch to a different internet provider.

Many providers offer big introductory discounts - such as this package from eir, which can save you €432 when compared to the standard price of the plan.

So, if you haven’t switched in a while, the chances are you could make big savings by doing so. It’s also possible you could get better broadband speed, or additional features and benefits, when you change provider.

Think about your broadband bundle

If you have broadband, TV and phone, you will usually save by bundling all of the elements together, so if you’re not currently doing this, you could consider it.

Ditch the elements of your plan that you don’t use

Have a bells-and-whistles TV plans but spend all your time streaming content? You might make savings by switching to a broadband-only deal and paying a monthly streaming service subscription, or using online players from the likes of RTÉ or TV3.

How can I make the most of the broadband package I have?

If you’re not in a position to switch at the moment, or you don’t have many options for broadband where you live, it’s important to get the most out of the package you do have.

Research carried out for Switcher.ie earlier this year showed that many of us don’t use the services that come with our TV packages.

There are some great features available with some TV plans, such as the ability to pause, rewind and record content, as well as access to on-demand content, so check out what comes with your plan and make sure you’re getting the best out of it.

Take action to make sure you’re not overpaying on broadband

The main thing is not to sit back and simply pay too much for a service you’re not happy with.

If you have issues with the performance of your broadband, TV or phone, speak to your provider about your concerns and they may be able to help.

If not, and you’re free to switch, check out all of the broadband packages available and see if you could find one to suit you - you could make huge savings and get a better package to boot.
