Virgin Media TV customers to get free access to all Champions League and Europa League games - as some games move to new exclusive channel
Anyone who isn't a Virgin Media customer can access content via the Virgin Media TV app, for a monthly charge.
A couple of weeks ago, we got the news that TV3 Group is rebranding to Virgin Media Television - from the 30th of August, TV3, 3e and be3, will be rebranded as Virgin Media One, Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Three, while 3 Player will be renamed ‘Virgin Media Player’.
We also heard news of a brand new channel, called Virgin Media Sport, and today we got some more details about what customers can expect from this channel.
What is Virgin Media Sport and what games will be shown on this channel?
First of all, Virgin Media Sport will be exclusive to Virgin Media TV customers, and all Wednesday night UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League matches will be broadcast on this channel for the next three years.
Qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2020, as well as the inaugural UEFA Nations League and other top football tournaments will also be broadcast exclusively on Virgin Media Sport.
This is a big change, as these kinds of games were previously available on TV3, which is a free-to-air channel available to all TV subscribers in Ireland, no matter their TV provider.
Tuesday night Champions League will still be available on free-to-air TV, with the early game on TV3 (soon to rebrand to Virgin Media One) and the late game on RTÉ.
How do I get access to Virgin Media Sport?
If you’re already a Virgin Media TV customer, you will get Virgin Media Sport absolutely free as part of your TV package.
If you have broadband and phone with Virgin Media or a Virgin Mobile plan, you’ll get access to the matches free for two months, and then you’ll be able to subscribe to Virgin Media Sport at a reduced rate of €10 per month after that.
If you’re not a Virgin Media customer, you’ll need to subscribe to the Virgin Media TV app - at a cost of €20 per month on a 30-day contract - to get access to all of this content.
What about other TV sports packages?
Unfortunately, the sports TV market can be quite confusing. There are a number of different packages and bundles available, and what’s included as standard will all depend on your current provider.
Our guide to TV sports packages has a lot of information to help you get started and compare what’s available across different providers.
